Uganda 's Patent Law provides for the registration and protection of patents and utility models. Among the country's Industrial property laws, the Patents Act is the one that has undergone the most recent revision. Under this law, applicants can register Patents for protection of 15 years (proposed to be increased to 20), whereas the duration of protection for utility models (certificates) is 7 years. The law also makes possible the filing of regional patent applications through the ARIPO system, as well as the PCT system. Currently, the country does not have an examination office. For this reason, applications are only filed at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau for onward transmission to ARIPO in Harare for substantive examination.

SIPI Law Associates continues to promote the use of Intellectual Property policies within Public research institutions and Private enterprises as a means of maximizing returns on investments in costly research & development ventures.
