Protection of creative musical and other artistic works is at an all time high in Uganda . The popularity of local music and the relative fame it brings is giving a prod to the budding film industry, both of which rely on effective copyright protection for sustainable growth. SIPI Law Associates has been engaged both at the policy level in the various consultative processes over a new Copyright Law, as well as working with local artists, Collecting Societies and encouraging enforcement of Copyright through litigation using the existing legislation.

The Copyright Act Cap 215 provides protection for the rights of individuals in musical, literary and artistic works, cinematography works, gramophone records, and broadcasts. The works may be those of persons who are citizens of Uganda or are domiciled or resident in Uganda , or works first published in Uganda or in any Scheduled Country. The Act gives the owner exclusive rights to the distribution of copies, public performances for payment and broadcasting of the work. Remedies against infringement include damages and injunctions. The Transfer of these rights may be achieved through assignment and Licenses. Of recent, the Commercial Division of the High Court has shown willingness to grant anton pillar orders in exceptional circumstances.
